We’ve all got the same amount of time on a given day; 1,440 minutes to be exact. How you use your time each day can help you be successful, or stressed in your virtual assistant business! Working from home doesn’t mean that you don’t have to put in as much effort as you would a job outside the home. To help you maximize your time, we’ve outlined a few of the biggest time wasters to avoid to make your virtual assistant business more successful.
Not Making a Task List
She’s making a list, checking it twice, right? Having a task list will help you be able to visualize exactly what you need to accomplish. You can get as detailed as an hourly plan or just have a monthly overview. Make sure to include work as well as personal tasks to make sure you’re on the same page with all areas of your life. Grab a paper calendar or find an app that will help you organize your tasks. Check out our Cool Tools for some time management suggestions.
Falling prey to distractions
We’ve all be there. A trip to the store for that one item for dinner, a 5-minute phone conversation or worse… you click on your Facebook feed for ‘just a quick look.’ It’s easy to become distracted when you work from home and life is staring back at you. Don’t fall prey to distractions! Stay focused and plan breaks so you’re less tempted to go off on rabbit trails that may harm your productivity for the day.
Having a designated workspace where your business is done can help you stay focused on your tasks. When you sit on the sofa with the TV on, you may be tempted to watch the commercials. Carve out a spot in your home and make it your work spot. It may be at a traditional desk, or just at the kitchen table. If your workspace is in a common area, be sure to have a bag or bin to put all of your work materials in so you don’t have to go searching for them under the couch the next day.
Most people think that working from home equals lots of free time. One of the benefits of having your own virtual assistant business is when life happens, you’re available. That doesn’t mean your flexibility should be taken advantage of. Learn to say no to things that may suck up your time that are not a priority. During your ‘work time,’ your priority should be your job!
Are you a morning person or a night owl? Do you have kids in the home during the day that need more of your attention at times? The beauty of having your own virtual assistant business is that you can tailor your schedule to what works best for you. Try keeping a time diary of all your tasks and activities for a week. Take some time to analyze your schedule to find your most productive work times.
Finding the balance between business and personal tasks might take some time, but you’ll find a schedule that works best for every area of your life. Even though you may have a work schedule that works for you, don’t forget that life happens and one of the biggest benefits of your business is your flexibility to chaperone a field trip or take a sick kid to the doctor’s office.
Learning how to use your time effectively can increase your productivity as well as helping you make time for the people and things that are most important to you.
